MTL is now able to offer music groups for parents and children aged between 0-5. Depending on numbers, groups are often split into three age categories of 0-18 months, 18 months to 3 years and 3-5 years.
Each group begins with a half an hour dedicated to conversation, refreshments and a chance to meet other parents and children from the area. This provides everyone a great opportunity to get to know each other and helps to build friendships, a strong sense of community and support in the group.
The music session itself lasts an hour (45 minutes for the earliest age group) and aims to create a sense of fun through the use of familiar songs, improvisations, dance and movement. The therapist leads the session using voice, guitar and/or keyboard and provides the group with a wide variety of interesting and easy to play instruments. Both adults and children are encouraged to play, share and interact using voice, music and actions.
As well as being entertaining, the ‘Song Time’ groups are also educational. Music helps to support speech and language development, and can build self-expression, confidence and motor skills. Sessions are designed to be relaxing and aim to enhance the parent/infant relationship. From the very first months of a baby’s life, singing or playing music together offers the parent and child a fun way of bonding with each other. The sessions use many songs that have hand motions and/or movements as young children of all ages love the interaction, physical touch, play and eye contact. The group also provides the children with a sense of intimacy, shared goals, closeness and ‘being with’ their parents.
Weekly group session prices range between £5-8 including refreshments.
